Its monumental circular and rectangular structures were built by hunter-gatherer communities between approximately 9600 and 8200 BCE. The site's distinctive T-shaped limestone pillars, some decorated with reliefs of wild animals and human features, provide important evidence for understanding social life, symbolism and ritual practices during a major period of transition in human history.

Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe should therefore be understood not as isolated discoveries, but within a much broader prehistoric landscape around Şanlıurfa. Research at Taş Tepeler includes several Neolithic sites, helping archaeologists examine how communities lived, built communal structures, and expressed their beliefs and social identities during the early Neolithic period.
